“If you ever wonder how far you’ve come, it’s good to look back at where you’ve been.”
This quote holds true for many aspects of life, including photography. I think about this with the analogy of bread (stay with me, ha!). When I was first married, I really wanted to learn how to bake amazing bread. Well, I set out to do that, and my first loaf was a disaster. I didn’t get the water warm enough to activate the yeast, I over-floured and overmixed it; it was basically an unrisen flour brick, ha! All these years later, and I’ve mastered the bread baking. But every single time I pull out some delicious bread, rolls, or baked goods from the oven, for a split second, my mind goes back to my bread brick, and I quickly smile. It brings me joy to remember that I’ve learned what I did by practicing for years!
We were talking to our kids about this principle this morning, which made me think about photography. When I first started, I really loved it already, but I did not understand how to really use my camera, lighting, posing, making clients feel comfortable, and session workflow. Now, to be clear, the families in these first photos are just as adorable and wonderful as the families in my latest photos. The only thing is, I should probably track them down and get them in for an updated session, ha! But what a difference sticking to your craft will make, putting in the hours to practice, perfect, and enjoy the learning process. I feel passionate about creating these images for clients and constantly learning, wondering where I can be in another 15 years!
